RiffleReeds
"Listen to the reeds. They are still turning the pages."
-- An InkKeeper saying
RiffleReeds are the reeds of The Ink Well. They grow straight and hollow as quills. They gave the ReedKin their roofs, their boats, their first pens and, some say, their first pipes, and every word ever written in Threadbare can trace its way back to them.

| Known for | The world's first pens, and the sound of turning pages |
RiffleReeds grow in tall, close-packed beds along the black water, each stem thin and hollow, its tip tapering to a fine point like the nib of a pen. When the wind moves through a reed bed, the stems brush against one another with a soft, quick, papery sound, exactly like someone flicking through the pages of a book. That sound gives the reeds their name, and on a breezy evening the whole Ink Well sounds like a library full of readers.
Cut at an angle and dipped in the Well, a hollow reed will carry ink. It was with one of these reeds that the Elder Rune wrote the first story on a pressed leaf, so that writing could at last leave the swamp.
Every InkKeepers apprentice still begins their training at the Well, in silence, cutting their first reed from the same beds the ReedKin once cut. The small reed boats that carry InkKeepers to and from the Well are the descendants of the ReedKin's canal boats.
Where the Void creeps close to the Ink Well, the reed beds stop riffling. The stems still sway, but they make no sound, like a book whose pages have all gone blank. The InkKeepers say the surest way to bring the sound back is to sit among the reeds and write.
