GinghamGrass

"Lie down in the gingham. The dream will find you."
-- A Noddling saying

GinghamGrass carpets the hills of The Drowsy Downs in soft checks of light and dark green, like a picnic blanket spread across the whole land. It is as soft as down underfoot, and it never makes a sound.

Known for Its checked pattern, and the softest landing in Threadbare

Appearance

Seen from the top of a hill, GinghamGrass makes the Downs look as though someone has laid a great checked cloth over them. Each square is a patch of grass grown a shade lighter or darker than its neighbours, and the squares stay perfectly even, however much the hills rumple and roll beneath them. At dusk, which lasts longer in the Downs than anywhere else, the checks soften into lilac and blue.

A Soft Landing

GinghamGrass is the softest grass in Threadbare, and it is very hard to stay standing in it for long. When a sleeper wakes suddenly and a Noddling tumbles out of their dream, it lands, blinking and bewildered, in the GinghamGrass, which is why no Noddling has ever been hurt by a fall.

Unlike GatherGrass, GinghamGrass makes no sound at all. The Noddlings say it is listening, and it would be rude to wake anyone.

GinghamGrass and the Void

Where the Void touches the Downs and the silver frost settles, the checks of the GinghamGrass begin to run together, light into dark, until the pattern is gone and the grass is a single flat grey. A dream told aloud on that spot brings the squares back, one at a time.

Gameplay Notes

  • Reading the land. The checks make the Downs easy to read at a glance, and a patch where the pattern has run tells the player the Void is close.
  • Restoration. Restoring a grey patch brings the checks back, square by square.
