Branding

Make your copy of Gubbins feel like yours. The Branding settings let you dial in a custom accent colour, add your own label beside the app name, and choose how solid or translucent the app's surfaces look.

Where to find it: Settings → Branding.

ℹ️ Note The name Gubbins itself can't be changed — Branding adds your own touches alongside it, rather than replacing it.

Custom accent colour

The Appearance & theming tab offers a row of ready-made accent swatches. Branding goes further: turn Custom accent colour on and a hue slider appears, so you can pick any colour for buttons, links, focus rings and the "look here" highlight.

The colour updates live as you drag, and its lightness is tuned automatically so it stays legible in both light and dark mode — just like the built-in swatches. Turn it back off to return to your chosen preset colour.

💡 Tip The custom accent stacks with everything else — light/dark mode, Pure black (OLED) and High contrast all still apply on top of your chosen hue.

Brand tagline

Add a short label — an organisation or family name, a site, a slogan — shown in a muted tone next to the Gubbins wordmark in the top-left of every screen and on the home screen. For example, a tagline of Acme Widgets shows as:

Gubbins · Acme Widgets

Leave it blank to show just "Gubbins".

Surface style

Sets how opaque the app's surfaces — item cards, dashboard widgets and panels — are:

  • Solid — fully opaque (the default).
  • Soft — a subtle translucency, so a hint of the background shows through.
  • Sheer — a more pronounced translucency, letting the mode and accent tint read clearly through the surface.

⚠️ Heads-up Menus, dialogs and pop-ups always stay solid so they're easy to read, and turning on High contrast (on the Appearance tab) keeps every surface solid whatever you pick here — so legibility always comes first.

ℹ️ Note If you leave this on Solid but switch on a Appearance & theming background effect (snow or rain), surfaces turn softly translucent on their own while the effect is running, so the drift shows faintly through — then return to solid when you turn it off. Choosing Soft or Sheer already shows the background through, so those are left as you set them.
