Glossary

A quick reference to the terms used throughout Gubbins and this wiki. Each links to a fuller explanation.

Term Meaning
Item The record for a kind of thing you track. See Items.
Location Where an item lives; hierarchical. See Locations & stock.
Stock How many of an item you have, tracked per location. See Locations & stock.
Tracking mode How an item is counted: Bulk, Serialised, Consumable, or Untracked. See Tracking modes.
Transfer Moving stock between your own locations. See Locations & stock.
Batch / lot A dated group of stock within a location, with an expiry. See Batches & lots.
Variant The same product in a different size/colour/value. See Variants & SKUs.
Kit An item defined as a reusable assembly of other items, which you can assemble and disassemble. See Kits & bundles.
Capability A weighted, searchable attribute of an item. See Custom fields & capabilities.
Custom field Your own labelled value on an item, usually per category. See Custom fields & capabilities.
Tag A freeform label shared across items and locations; a thing can have many. See Tags, attachments & related.
Condition A structured grade: Mint / Good / Needs Repair / Out for Calibration. See Condition grading.
Reorder point The stock level at which to buy more. See Reorder & shopping list.
Loan An item temporarily out with a contact. See Loans.
Booking A future reservation of an item for a contact. See Bookings.
Contact A person or organisation you lend to or borrow from. See Contacts.
Account Someone who uses this copy of Gubbins, as opposed to a contact, who is someone you record. Optional. See Users & accounts.
Role A named set of permissions given to one or more accounts. See Roles & permissions.
Permission Allowance to do one action (view, change, delete) in one area of Gubbins. See Roles & permissions.
Project A build with a bill of materials and budget. See Projects & BOM.
BOM Bill of materials — a parts list. A project's BOM covers one build; a reusable one is a kit. See Projects & BOM.
Purchase order (PO) A tracked order to a supplier. See Purchase orders.
Wishlist Things you want to buy but don't own yet. See Wishlist.
Cycle count Checking on-hand stock against reality, per location. See Cycle counts & audit day.
Attrition Extra material a consumable loses each time you use some — trimmings, spillage, dust. See Low stock & gauges.
FEFO First-expiry-first-out — consuming the soonest-expiring batch first. See Batches & lots.
Depreciation An asset's falling book value over time. See Warranty & depreciation.
Current value A manual, up-to-date worth for appreciating assets. See Current value & revaluation.
Local-first Your data lives on your device, works offline. See How your data is stored.
Sync Keeping devices in step via your own storage. See Cloud sync.
Module A page or capability you can hide/show. See Modular UI.
Bridge An optional server that exposes your data to other tools. See Bridge overview.
PWA A web app you can install like a native one. See Installing Gubbins.
