Variants and SKUs
When one product comes in several sizes, colours or values, you don't want a dozen unrelated items cluttering your inventory. Variants link a parent item to its child variants, so they stay grouped but each keeps its own stock.
Where to find it: the Lifecycle tab of an item's details, once the Variants & SKUs capability is enabled (Modular UI).
A variant is the same product in a different flavour:
- Resistors: 1 kΩ, 10 kΩ, 100 kΩ.
- A T-shirt: S / M / L, in black or white.
- Filament: the same brand in a dozen colours.
You keep one parent item for the product and add child variants under it — each with its own stock, SKU/part number, price and details. Browsing stays tidy, but you can still see the whole family together.
ℹ️ Note Variants are for the same product. That's different from:
- Kits & bundles — an item made of several other items.
- Related items — separate items that work with each other.
- Substitutions — items that can stand in for one another.
💡 Tip Use a variant's SKU/part number to hold the specific ordering code for that size or colour — handy when you reorder or scan a specific variant.
- Items — the parent and child items themselves.
- Kits & bundles — assemblies built from components.
- Custom fields & capabilities — capturing the attribute that varies (size, colour) as a searchable field.
