You can give the AI files to work with: documents, tables, images, and recordings. AI Studio reads the files on your computer and sends their content with your message. Which formats work is listed in Pandoc and File Formats.
- Click the paperclip, "Click here to attach files.", and choose one or more files.
- Or drag the files anywhere onto the chat page. While you drag, AI Studio shows "Drop files here to attach them."
Once files are attached, the paperclip shows their number. Click the number to open "Your attached files":
- "Preview what we send to the AI." shows the text AI Studio read from a file. For large files, the preview shows only the beginning; the AI still receives the whole file.
- "Remove this attachment." removes a file.
- Files that were deleted, renamed, or moved since you attached them are struck through.
You can also drop more files into this window.
- Attachments belong to the message you send next. After that, the input field is empty again.
- The AI receives the text of each file, together with its name and its path on your computer.
- Images reach the AI as images, if the model accepts them.
- Each request contains the whole conversation, so the content of earlier attachments is sent again with every later message. Many or large files therefore make the chat slower and more expensive. The token counter shows how much the chat uses.
A sent message shows "Number of attachments" in its header. Click it to see the files of this message.
AI Studio reads a document once, when you first send it, and keeps the text. Later messages carry this text, even if you change, move, or delete the file meanwhile.
To send the new content of a changed file, attach it again. Or switch on "Read changed attachments again?" in the "Chat Options": AI Studio then reads a changed file again and sends its new content with your next message.
With a transcription provider, you can attach recordings, audio files, and video files. AI Studio asks first, in "Transcribe media files", because it uploads the audio to your transcription provider. While the transcription runs, a status line shows its progress, and "Stop media transcription" cancels it. Once done, the transcript is attached in place of the file.
Without a transcription provider, AI Studio says: "Media files require a configured transcription provider. Configure one in the transcription settings." See Providers and Models.
Files from others may contain hidden instructions meant to make the AI do something you didn't ask for. AI Studio checks attached text and removes such instructions before the AI sees them. It then tells you, for example: "AI Studio removed suspicious instructions from '…' before using it."
Whether you see the details, you choose in "Settings" → "App Options" → "Show details when suspicious content was removed?"
Several assistants accept files, for example, Coding, My Tasks, SWOT Analysis, Document Analysis, the Slide Assistant, and Visual Briefing. They show a marked area: drop files there or click "Add file". "Clear file list" removes all files. Assistants read their files anew on every run.
Other assistants, such as Translation, load a file into their text field instead.
