Chat Templates

A chat template starts a chat with prepared instructions. Use it for recurring tasks, for example, to review texts along the rules of your team, or to give the AI a fixed role. A template can bring its own system prompt, a first message, files, and example messages, and it can decide which provider, profile, tools, and workspace a chat starts with.

Chat templates are meant for users who know a little about writing prompts. For everyday tasks without prompts, the assistants are often the easier choice.

Creating a template

Chat templates aren't on the "Settings" page. You manage them from the chat:

1. In the chat, click the template button. Its tooltip reads "Start a new chat with a chat template".
2. Choose "Manage your templates". The dialog "Your Chat Templates" opens.
3. Click "Add Chat Template", enter a "Chat Template Name" of at most 40 characters, and fill in what you need.
4. Click "Add".

Faster: have a chat that works well, then choose "Create template from current chat" in the same menu. The template takes over the name, the system prompt, and all messages of the chat as an example conversation.

What a template can contain

Section	What it does
"System Prompt"	The instructions for the AI, in place of the default instructions of the chat. "Use the default system prompt" gives you a starting point.
"Predefined User Input"	A first message that lands in the input field, for example, a form to fill in.
"File Attachments"	Files that come with the first message of every chat with this template.
"Profile Usage"	Whether profiles are allowed with this template, and which profile a chat starts with.
"Provider"	Which provider a chat starts with. It must meet the confidence level required for chats.
"Workspace"	A workspace of its own for the chats of this template. AI Studio creates it when needed.
"Tools"	Which tools a chat starts with. Choosing no tool at all is a valid choice, too.
"Data Sources"	Which data sources a chat starts with. This section appears only when the preview feature for data sources is on.
"Example Conversation"	Example messages of the user and the AI, showing the format and style you expect. Each chat with this template starts with them.

Everything a template preselects stays changeable in the chat.

Starting a chat with a template

Click the template button in the chat and choose a template. AI Studio starts a new chat with it. The predefined input appears in the input field, and the files of the template are attached.

To start every new chat with a certain template, open "Chat Options" with the gear icon, switch on "Preselect chat options?", and choose under "Preselect one of your chat templates?".

Editing, deleting, and importing

In "Your Chat Templates", each template has "Edit" and "Delete". With "Import Chat Template", you add a template that a colleague shared with you as text. When files of the template are missing on your computer, AI Studio asks you to link them again or to remove them.

Templates of your organization

Your organization may provide chat templates. They show a building icon. You can use them and view them with "View", but you can't change them. Your organization may also preselect a template for you or switch off importing.
