GS1 Digital Link URIs

GS1 Digital Link QR Code and GS1 Digital Link Data Matrix take a GS1 Digital Link URI as their data: the identifiers of the GS1 Application Identifier standard format, written as a web address that a phone can open.

A GS1 Digital Link URI is made up of:

  • A scheme of http:// or https://, in lower or upper case.
  • A domain, optionally followed by path elements of its own. id.gs1.org is GS1's resolver.
  • A primary key: a key's Application Identifier and value as path elements, such as /01/09521234543213 for a GTIN.
  • Any key qualifiers of that primary key as further path elements, in the order that the standard gives for that key, such as /10/ABC123 for a batch.
  • Any data attributes as a query string, such as ?17=261231 for an expiration date.

Characters that a URI cannot carry are percent-encoded, such as %2d for a hyphen.

The structure is defined in the GS1 Digital Link Standard: URI Syntax.

GS1 Digital Link URI Linting

The structure of the URI is always checked. Input is refused if:

  • The scheme is not http://, https://, HTTP:// or HTTPS://.
  • There is no domain or path.
  • The path does not contain a valid primary key.
  • The Application Identifiers in the path are not a valid key and qualifier sequence for the key, such as a serial before a batch.
  • A percent-encoded character is not valid.
  • A key qualifier appears in the query string rather than the path.

Unless the dontlint option is given, the following are also checked:

  • Each Application Identifier in the query string must be a valid GS1 Digital Link data attribute.
  • Each value must meet the structural rules for its Application Identifier, as given in the GS1 Barcode Syntax Dictionary, such as a correct check digit or a valid date. The Application Identifier definitions are provided in the GS1 General Specifications.
  • Application Identifiers that are mutually exclusive are refused, such as (01) and (37).
