Asset Management Overview
Asset management in HMIS covers the registration, categorization, and tracking of capital goods and equipment — such as medical devices, furniture, vehicles, and infrastructure items.
Important Note: The asset management module is currently in an early/framework stage. Category management and basic registry views are available. Full asset lifecycle management (procurement, depreciation, maintenance scheduling, disposal) is under development.
Asset categories provide a classification hierarchy for capital goods.
Navigation: Stores → Manage Store → Asset Categories
Operations:
- Create a new asset category
- Edit an existing category
- List all categories
- View category details
Asset categories extend the standard store item category hierarchy, allowing assets to be classified alongside other store items.
A basic asset registry view is available to list assets registered in the system.
Navigation: Stores → Reports → Asset Registry
A report showing assets allocated to each department.
Navigation: Stores → Reports → Department Assets
A print form for recording fixed asset additions (for accounting purposes).

Similar to asset categories, consumable categories classify non-pharmaceutical consumable items (e.g., PPE, office supplies, housekeeping materials).
Navigation: Stores → Manage Store → Consumable Categories
These are used to organize items within the stores module for reporting and management purposes.
The following asset management features are planned but not yet implemented:
| Feature | Status |
|---|---|
| Asset procurement workflow (PO → GRN for assets) | Planned |
| Asset register with full asset details (serial number, model, manufacturer) | Planned |
| Depreciation scheduling | Planned |
| Asset maintenance history | Planned |
| Preventive maintenance scheduling | Planned |
| Medical equipment calibration records | Planned |
| Asset disposal workflow | Planned |
| Asset transfer between departments | Planned |
Until these features are fully implemented, many hospitals use the Pharmacy module with appropriate item categories to track medical equipment and consumables, benefiting from the pharmacy module's more complete stock management features.
Because the pharmacy module has a full procurement and stock management workflow, some hospitals use it to manage:
- Medical supplies and consumables
- Low-value equipment items
- Implants and high-cost consumables linked to patient BHT
This is supported by configuring separate pharmacy department types for stores vs. dispensing departments.
