Pass journal

⋮ › Pass journal: every pass you followed, kept on the phone — and what came of it. Replay it with its sound, on the sky or on the map, and share it as a picture, a video or a GIF.

The passes kept A pass on the sky, an SSTV picture arriving The same pass on the map, RS0ISS heard

The passes kept · the sky during the replay, an SSTV picture arriving · the map with the footprint and the RS0ISS card (ISS, 3 October).

From 20.79 the page is organised by theme, behind icons: Passes, Summary, Find (past passes, online log, pass file, notification). A pass too: the sky or map and the replay stay on top, then Moments (contacts, pictures, APRS frames, bookmarks), Replay (accelerated replay, what shows), Summary, Share (make a picture, a video, a GIF or a sound, of the whole pass or a moment; delete), and the save icon at the top for the pass file.

What is kept

A pass is kept when a satellite is followed (its page open) for at least a minute above the horizon:

  • the trajectory really followed, a point every 5 s;
  • the rig's frequencies as read over CAT — one more point each time the rig is retuned through the passband (from 20.79) — and where the antennas really pointed;
  • the IC-9700's S-meter, read once a second during the pass, never while transmitting (from 20.79);
  • the recordings made during the pass, the station profile and the last station test.

Found at their time and drawn on the pass: the contacts of the log, the SSTV pictures, the APRS frames (those relayed by the ISS in yellow). Kept on the phone only, the 500 most recent passes.

Kept by itself (from 20.79)

A pass is also kept when the recorder runs while the satellite's page is not open, screen off included. The list and the card say who started it:

  • automatic SSTV: the recorder armed for the ISS; the transmitter is the one automatic SSTV tuned;
  • every pass under CAT: the Audio recording option; the transmitter is the one chosen when it armed;
  • recording in the background: a recording started by hand, then the page left.

Opening or leaving the page mid-pass still makes one entry. At its end a quiet notification (no sound) says so: time, max elevation, sound, SSTV pictures, contacts, APRS. Tapping it opens that pass in the journal. It is turned off in the journal's Find tab ("Tell me when a pass is kept by itself").

A pass kept by itself

Bookmarks (from 20.79)

During a pass, the purple flag ⚑ — on the pass line, next to the calendar, and at the top of the contact entry — marks the moment: a callsign heard but not logged, an odd signal. Nothing is written to the log; a word confirms the time. The bookmark is a purple point on the sky and the map, listed in Moments (jump to it, remove it with ✕), the accelerated replay slows down around it as for a contact, and it travels in the pass file.

After the pass, a bookmark's pencil lets you write what was heard ("EA4… calling CQ"): the note shows next to the ⚑ on the sky and the map. If it was a contact, To the log enters it there, with its callsign and locator, at the bookmark's time (azimuth and elevation recomputed), and the bookmark goes away.

Sky or map

  • Sky: the pass as followed (solid) against the prediction (dashed), framed on the trajectory — a low pass is enlarged. Pinch to zoom, drag to move, double tap to come back; Whole sky.
  • Map (OpenStreetMap): the ground track and the footprint of the satellite (where it is above the horizon from), the stations at their locator or APRS position in grey, linked to where the satellite was at that moment; your station.

On both, a contact or an APRS frame is a point with its callsign; an SSTV picture is the stretch of trajectory it took to arrive, in orange.

Replay

Replay with the sound when the recording is still on the phone (without it, ten times faster). The slider moves through the pass; position, frequencies and antennas follow.

  • An SSTV picture appears from its first line and is drawn as it arrives, then stays 3, 5 or 10 s once complete. Its size is set with a slider.
  • Cards for the log contact and the APRS station: callsign, name, town and country, locator and distance, mode and reports or the APRS comment. Name and town come from any contact with that station (one imported from Wavelog has them), then the correspondents' memory; from the log, the APRS position, then QRZ.com when its credentials are set up. RS0ISS has its own: the ISS's digipeater.
  • Log contacts can be put back a few seconds (up to two minutes): logged after the contact ended, they then fall where they are heard.
  • Pictures: received live, decoded again or all; and one by one, ✓ or ✕ (the small mark in their corner).

RX frequency, S-meter, my locator (from 20.79)

During the replay, a band at the bottom of the sky or the map shows the RX frequency — at rest, where the rig was in the passband, as the log has it — and the S-meter as on the IC-9700 (S1 to 9 white, +20 to +60 red, the peak in yellow). Without a frequency read over CAT (a pass rebuilt, imported, or followed without CAT), the RX frequency is each log contact's own, from its time on. The S-meter exists only for passes followed with the IC-9700 under CAT.

RS-44 replayed: the S-meter and the RX frequency under the sky RS-44 replayed on the map

RS-44, 6 October: S5 at 21:35, RX 435.6375 MHz at rest.

On the map, your station is a black point, and (option) "F4IOZ · JN18FT" is written on its left. A station on a line or a corner between locators ("JN06,JN16", as Wavelog gives it) has its point in the middle of its locators. All three are set in the Replay tab, Also show: S-meter, RX frequency, my locator on the map — for the replay and for the video, where the S-meter shows at the moments of reception.

A contact from the journal (from 20.79)

+ Contact here, next to the replay's time (or To the log from a bookmark): a contact for the log at that moment, already filled with what the pass knew — satellite, mode, ↓ and ↑ frequencies at rest (read over CAT with that second's Doppler taken off, else the transmitter's), azimuth and elevation, the pass's locator. Callsigns already worked are offered as you type; Look up fills name, QTH and locator from the log, then QRZ.com. Left to fill: locator, reports, name, QTH, a note.

Go straight to a moment (from 20.79)

The ISS pass: a Robot 36 picture arriving, the four pictures in Moments The same ISS pass on the map

ISS, 4 October: four Robot 36 pictures; tapping one replays the pass from where it started arriving.

In a pass's Moments tab, tapping a callsign (log contacts), an SSTV picture, an APRS frame or a bookmark starts the replay just before it, with the sound, and brings the view back to the top. Start before sets how long (0 to 60 s, 10 s by default) for a contact or a frame; a picture starts 1 s before its reception began.

Accelerated replay (from 20.79)

An option under the replay, ×5, ×10, ×20 or ×50: the replay rushes without sound where nothing was logged, and goes back to normal speed, with the sound, around each item:

  • a log contact (voice): from "Start before" to Go on after a contact (0 to 120 s, 30 s by default) — the talk goes on after it was logged;
  • an SSTV picture: from 1 s before it starts to its end;
  • an APRS frame: from "Start before" to 3 s after;
  • a bookmark: as a contact.

Two items less than 5 s apart make one stretch.

Slow down on activity heard too (on by default): SatMe listens to the pass's sound and finds where there is a voice, a carrier or an SSTV picture, even with nothing logged. The accelerated replay goes back to normal speed there (from 1 s before to 2 s after), and a thin grey bar under the slider shows those moments, with the contacts, pictures, frames and bookmarks in their colours. Not the loudness: the share of the voice band against the highs, where the hiss lives; the threshold follows each recording. The spoken header at the start never counts. Worked out once per recording, then kept next to it (.activite). A recording busy from start to end, with no hiss at all, shows nothing: there is nothing to compare it with.

Share

A picture made by SatMe: the ISS over Europe, the SSTV picture arriving

A pass's Share tab, one path (from 20.79):

  1. Of what? The whole pass, or A moment (a whole QSO…): put the replay at its start and tap ⇤ Start, then at its end and tap End ⇥; one of the pass's stations in a tap for the title, editable. The share icon of a contact, an APRS frame or a bookmark (Moments tab) sets that moment by itself.
  2. In which form? Picture (the moment replayed), Video (real time with the sound, ten times faster without, or accelerated as the replay; very light 480 px, light 720 px or HD 1080 px), animated GIF (about fifteen seconds, looping) or Sound (WAV, playable anywhere). Only that form's options show: open on a title (satellite, UTC times, the receiving station, the SatMe logo — and for a moment, its own title in large: "QSO EA4XYZ", "APRS RS0ISS"), end on a summary (the whole pass).
  3. Make, then Share or Save on the phone.

What is exported is the view as shown — sky or map, as zoomed.

SSTV pictures and report elements (in Share, kept with the pass): The pass's default version of the SSTV pictures — Raw (as received) at first, Auto (best mark), Corrected, Fused — and Mark corrected/fused (unticked at first); then the Report elements of the pass's SSTV event: Receive montage (the simple chain here), Slide grid, Pass sky plot, Elevation profile, SSTV figures, Event's sheet, SatMe logo, each an overlay (at its own place) and/or a card (a frame of its own in the video and the GIF: the montage after the title, the others at the end); all unticked at first. Choosing picture by picture and placing with the mouse are done on the journal page served to the PC (below); details in SatMe-PC › SSTV pictures and report elements.

Journal summary (from 20.79)

The page's Summary tab: the totals (passes, contacts and callsigns, SSTV pictures, APRS stations heard, bookmarks), then one line per satellite. Stations map draws on OpenStreetMap every station worked (at its locator) and every APRS station heard (where it said it was), and your station in black; to share or save.

Past passes

Find past passes (Find tab) looks for the passes of what SatMe already kept: the log's contacts, the SSTV pictures, the APRS frames relayed by the ISS (last 7 days), the recordings. A pass with a contact, a picture or a recording is offered; its sound comes with it when a recording covers it. The trajectory is the predicted one (today's elements, from the locator of the time), marked rebuilt.

From the online log (from 20.79)

Find tab, From the online log (Wavelog / Cloudlog): your station locations listed (each with its locator), to tick; their satellite contacts are read (read only — a read key is enough), then kept by period, satellite and station locator; Find the passes rebuilds them, to tick too. Contacts missing from the phone go into its log with everything (mode, frequencies, reports, locators, azimuth recomputed), marked as already online: never sent back.

Recordings made before 20.76 did not keep the length of their spoken header: it is estimated (the file's length less the time between its name and its last write), so the sound and the pictures decoded again from them come back to the time they were received.

Several sound files (from 20.79)

A pass may have several recordings (stopped, then started again…). Summary tab: Sound files of the pass, in order; ✕ removes one, Add a sound file offers those within 3 h of the pass. The replay goes from one to the next by itself (silent in between); extracts, the video and the activity heard take them all.

A pass in one file (from 20.79)

The save icon at the top of the pass, next to the satellite's name: the pass, its recording, its SSTV pictures and its bookmarks in one .zip file, to Share or Save on the phone — to keep it elsewhere or give it to another SatMe station. Pictures set aside are left out; the APRS frames stay in their log. With its contacts (box in the same window, unticked by default): the pass's contacts go too, without their email; the other phone shows them with the pass, never in its own log.

This pass in one file

On the other phone, Open a pass file (Find tab) puts the sound and the pictures in place and opens the pass; if it is already there, the two are merged. Nothing is overwritten; a file that is not a SatMe pass, or too big (300 MB), is refused.

The journal on the PC (from 20.80)

The same passes, replayed on a big screen. Turn on the control desk (Settings › Share and listen › Share): its page shows a Pass journal link at the top, or open its address followed by journal, with the same six-digit code. The phone can be plugged into the PC by its USB cable (USB tethering): no Wi-Fi, no internet needed.

The pass journal in the PC's browser: the ISS pass on the map, an SSTV picture arriving, the timeline

  • The passes on the left (one satellite, or all), with what each holds: sound, contacts, SSTV pictures, APRS, bookmarks, S-meter.
  • Sky or Map: the sky with the trajectory followed up to the moment and the predicted one dashed; or an OpenStreetMap map (drag, wheel to zoom) with the ground track, the satellite's footprint, your station ("F4IOZ · JN18FT") and the stations worked or heard, linked to the satellite at their moment. The map's tiles are fetched by the phone and kept on it: the PC fetches nothing outside.
  • The moment, beside it: time, azimuth and elevation, RX frequency, the IC-9700's S-meter, the SSTV picture drawn as it arrives, the station just worked or heard with its card (name, town, locator — from the log, APRS or QRZ.com).
  • The timeline: contacts, pictures, frames and bookmarks, the activity heard, the S-meter as a curve. Click to go there, drag to pick a stretch (a whole QSO), the wheel zooms, a double-click shows the whole pass. Space plays and pauses, the arrow keys move 5 s (Shift: 30 s); the speed goes to ×2 or ×4.
  • Moments tab: a click replays from just before; Pick this stretch selects it, with a title ("QSO EA4XYZ").
  • Replay tab: accelerated replay (×5 to ×50, fast and silent where nothing was logged or heard, normal speed with the sound around each item), start before a contact, go on after it, slow down on activity heard; what shows (SSTV picture, station card, S-meter, RX frequency, your callsign and locator on the map). Kept on the PC; the phone's own settings do not change.
  • Make tab, from the stretch picked or the whole pass (video size, opening title, closing summary, with the sound, accelerated as the replay): a sound (WAV), a picture of the moment, a video with its sound, an animated GIF (sky or map), or the pass file (.zip). The phone makes them, as from its Share tab; they arrive on the PC with a Download button. The recordings themselves download too.
  • In Make, the SSTV pictures (the pass's version, then picture by picture, Make the fusion) and the report elements, as overlays placed with the mouse or as cards — as in SatMe-PC.

Nothing in the journal, the log or the gallery is deleted from the PC; only the pass's SSTV picture and element choices change (kept with it), and a fusion made beside the received pictures.
