Locators, POTA and skeds

Where you are in Maidenhead terms, which locators are next door, which parks are around, and when you can meet another station on a satellite.

The locator page

Tap your locator under the app title (e.g. JN18FT).

  • Your locator in big type, your coordinates, and the Field / Square / Subsquare breakdown.
  • Neighbouring locators — all 8, nearest first: direction, locator and distance to its border. Marks: ★ never worked on satellite · ✓ already done · ✓✓ confirmed (from your log, the online logbook or LoTW).
  • An interactive map: tap any point to read its locator; pinch and drag to move. Locators you have worked are painted on it.

Map backgrounds: offline drawing (no network needed), OpenStreetMap, Topo, Dark, Satellite.

Tip — hunting grid lines portable: the distances tell you how far you are from the next locator, and in GPS mode they follow you as you drive.

POTA — Parks on the Air

Settings › POTA — Parks on the Air

  1. Tap your continent to download the park catalogue from pota.app.
  2. Turn on Show POTA parks near the QTH: nearby parks are listed with their distance.
  3. Park boundaries, ahead of time: fetch the outlines around you while you still have a network — on site there often is none.

When you are near a park, SatMe proposes it (I am in …); it cannot know whether you crossed the boundary, so confirm only if you are inside.

Skeds announced on hams.at

Meetups and activations announced on hams.at show up on the passes and the satellite pages.

Setting (Settings › Skeds (hams.at)) Effect
Workable skeds only keeps the ones where the satellite is also visible from your QTH
hams.at API token (optional) with it, hams.at computes your visible windows, max elevation and match % (token from hams.at › settings › API)

Mutual sked

⋮ › Mutual sked — for a contact arranged with another station.

  1. Pick a satellite.
  2. Type the other station's locator (4 or 6 characters, e.g. FN20) and its minimum elevation.
  3. Compute (48 h): SatMe lists the windows where the satellite is visible from both stations.
  4. Play the window on the double polar plot, then Share sked to send a picture to the other operator.

Tips

  • Locators announced with yours (QRV photo, log, ADIF) are shown in amber on the map.
  • The QRV photo (📷 on a pass page) puts your locator and the satellite on a picture to share before an activation.
