What Is the Path of the Giant?

The Path of the Giant is a Barbarian subclass that draws on the primal power of giants. Its Rage physically enlarges you and turns throwing into a real damage option instead of a situational trick, and every later feature builds on either the size or the throw.

Class Features

Progression Overview

LEVEL FEATURE
3 Giant's Rage, Vaprak's Greed, Thaumaturgy
5 Boot of the Giants
6 Elemental Cleaver
10 Mighty Impel

Level 3

Giant's Rage Giant's Rage replaces the standard Rage. While Raging you grow one size category, and your Rage damage bonus is doubled on Throw attacks. You keep everything base Rage gives you — the damage bonus, the physical damage Resistances, and Advantage on Strength checks and saves.

Vaprak's Greed Your carrying capacity is increased by a quarter — or by half if you are a Human. Growing a size while Raging raises it a further quarter on top of that.

Thaumaturgy An Action that grants you Advantage on Intimidation and Performance checks for 10 turns.

Level 5

Boot of the Giants A Bonus Action kick that shoves a target away and deals your Unarmed Strike damage. The attempt is resolved against your Athletics, your chances improve if you are Hidden or Invisible, and you can kick targets up to twice the weight you could Shove.

Level 6

Elemental Cleaver Channel primordial might into your weapon. It can only be used while Raging. For 10 turns the weapon deals additional Acid, Cold, Fire, Lightning, or Thunder damage — you pick the type — and gains the Thrown property. A weapon thrown this way reappears in your hand immediately.

Level 10

Mighty Impel A Bonus Action, usable while Raging, that throws a creature or object of Medium size or smaller up to 9 m. Heavier targets deal more damage on impact.

Playstyle Notes

The Path of the Giant is the throwing Barbarian. Doubling the Rage damage bonus on Throw attacks is the whole point of the subclass, and it's the only thing in the game that scales throwing with Barbarian level.

The pieces don't come together until Level 6, though. Before Elemental Cleaver you need something worth throwing — a javelin, a returning weapon, or whatever heavy object is lying around — because throwing away your actual weapon leaves you unarmed. Elemental Cleaver solves that permanently: your main weapon gains Thrown and comes straight back, so from Level 6 on you can throw the same enchanted weapon every turn and still take Extra Attack swings with it.

Growing a size while Raging matters beyond flavour. Larger creatures can throw larger things, which combines with Mighty Impel at Level 10 — picking up an enemy and throwing it deals your doubled Rage bonus and drops the target somewhere inconvenient, often off a ledge.

Vaprak's Greed and Thaumaturgy are the quiet ones. The carry capacity boost is genuinely useful for a class that wants heavy things to throw, and Advantage on Intimidation makes a Strength-based Barbarian a workable face in dialogue, since Primal Knowledge at Level 3 already lets you make Intimidation checks with Strength while Raging.
