Subclass Gunslinger High Roller
![]()
The High Roller is a Gunslinger subclass built around the base class's Risk mechanic — a double-or-nothing gamble on every shot, Risk Die regeneration, and a Level 10 capstone that makes the most defensive maneuvers free to use.
| LEVEL | FEATURE |
|---|---|
| 3 | Poker Face, Liar's Dice |
| 6 | Risky Business |
| 10 | Risk Taker |
You gain proficiency with all Gaming Sets and in one skill of your choice: Deception, Insight, or Perception.
Pick Deception, Insight, or Perception based on which social role the character fills.
By expending a Risk Die, you roll a d20.
- On a 10 or higher: the damage of your next ranged weapon attack is doubled.
- On a 9 or lower: the damage of your ranged weapon attacks this turn is halved.
Liar's Dice is a 55% chance to double your next shot vs. a 45% chance to halve all attacks this turn. Expected value is positive, but variance is real.
Once per turn when you make an attack roll against an enemy without Disadvantage, you can choose to make the roll with Disadvantage. When you do, you regain one expended Risk Die.
It runs on its own charge, separate from your Risk Dice, and that charge comes back at the start of every turn — so it really is once per turn, every turn.
Risky Business lets you recoup a spent Risk Die by voluntarily taking Disadvantage on an attack you were confident in. Use it on the shot you were least worried about missing.
You can use your Maverick Spirit and Skin of Your Teeth maneuvers without expending a Risk Die. When you do, roll a d6 instead of a Risk Die.
Risk Taker decouples survival tools from offensive resources. The d6 replacement roll reduces potency slightly, but your Risk Dice pool is fully available for Liar's Dice and Risky Business from Level 10 onward.
The High Roller is a variance-embracing striker that turns the base Gunslinger's Risk pool into an offensive engine with consistent regeneration.
Your combat loop:
- Liar's Dice — spend a Risk Die before a high-value shot to double the damage; 55% chance to pay off big
- Risky Business — voluntarily take Disadvantage on a favourable attack to recover a spent die, once every turn
- Risk Taker at Level 10 — Maverick Spirit and Skin of Your Teeth cost no dice; your full pool goes toward damage
- Poker Face — social toolkit that earns its keep outside of combat
