TwilightDomain

What Is the Twilight Domain?

The Twilight Domain is a Cleric subclass built around darkness as shelter rather than as a weapon. Its Level 3 features all point the same direction: Eyes of Night gives you the longest Darkvision in the game and lets you hand it out to the party, Vigilant Blessing sets up an ally to act first, and Twilight Sanctuary turns your Channel Divinity into a moving aura that feeds temporary hit points to everyone around you every round. At Level 6, Steps of Night gives you flight — but only while you are standing in dim light or darkness.

Where the Shadow Domain uses darkness to hide and control, the Twilight Domain uses it to protect.

Level 3 Features

Twilight Domain Spells

Your Domain grants an expanding spell list that is always prepared and doesn't count against your limit:

CLERIC LEVEL SPELLS ADDED
3 Faerie Fire, Sleep, Moonbeam, See Invisibility
5 Aura of Vitality, Void Strike
7 Freedom of Movement, Greater Invisibility
9 Circle of Power, Dawn

10 spells total. The list leans toward vision and sustain rather than raw damage. See Invisibility at Level 3 pairs with your Darkvision to make you the party's answer to anything hiding. Aura of Vitality at Level 5 turns one slot into repeatable healing that lasts the whole fight. Freedom of Movement at Level 7 shuts down the Restrained and Paralysed conditions that would otherwise strand your frontline. Circle of Power at Level 9 gives resistance to spell damage and Advantage on saving throws against spells to everyone in the aura.

Eyes of Night

A passive that triggers immediately on taking this Domain:

  • Superior Darkvision — Your Darkvision extends to 24 meters, double the usual racial range.
  • Shareable — You unlock an Action that grants the same Darkvision to allies within 9 meters (30 feet).

The shared Darkvision has no duration limit — it stays until removed. You only need to cast it once per ally, so in practice this is something you do out of combat before entering a dark area.

24 meters is the longest Darkvision available to a player character. Handing it to a party with no Darkvision races is a genuine exploration upgrade, not just a combat one — it removes the need to carry light sources that give away your position.

Vigilant Blessing

As an Action, you touch one creature and prepare them to react first.

The target gains a +5 bonus to their next Initiative roll. The effect is unique — casting it on someone else moves the blessing, matching the rule that the benefit ends if you use the feature again. It clears when combat ends, so it applies to one fight at a time.

You can target yourself as well as an ally.

The tabletop version of this feature grants Advantage on the Initiative roll. Baldur's Gate 3 has no mechanic for Advantage on Initiative, so it is implemented as a flat +5 — the same conversion the Bard's Tandem Footwork uses. Cast it before you open a fight, not during one.

Twilight Sanctuary — Channel Divinity

Your Channel Divinity option at Level 3. As an Action, you present your holy symbol and a sphere of twilight spreads out from you.

The sphere has a 9 meter (30 foot) radius, is centred on you, moves with you, and lasts 10 turns. Whenever a creature ends its turn inside it, that creature:

  • Gains 1d6 + your Cleric level temporary hit points
  • Has the Charmed and Frightened conditions removed

Both the caster and every ally in range are covered. The temporary hit points refresh every round, so as long as the sphere holds, your party absorbs a small amount of damage each turn for free.

At Cleric 3 this is 1d6+3 (4–9 temporary hit points per ally per round); at Cleric 9 it is 1d6+9 (10–15). Across a four-person party standing inside the aura for a full 10 turns, that is a large amount of absorbed damage for a single Channel Divinity charge. The condition removal is the other half — it makes Charm and Fear effects last one round instead of several.

The tabletop feature ends one Charmed or Frightened effect. This implementation removes both, as a convenience — having both conditions at once is rare enough that splitting them would add a choice with no real content.

Level 6 Features

Steps of Night

At Level 6, you can pull yourself into the air on a Bonus Action — but only from shadow.

You gain a flying speed equal to your walking speed for 10 turns. The action is only available while you are standing in dim light or darkness — in clear, well-lit terrain the button is disabled, and it re-enables the moment the light around you changes.

The number of uses equals your Wisdom modifier (minimum 1), tracked as a dedicated Steps of Night action resource on the resource panel, replenished on Long Rest.

WISDOM SCORE STEPS OF NIGHT USES
13 or lower 1
14–15 2
16–17 3
18–19 4
20–21 5
22–23 6
24+ 7

The light requirement only applies at the moment you activate it. Once you are flying, walking back into bright light does not cancel the flight. Darkness — which is already easy for you to produce and to see through — is a reliable launch pad.

Playstyle Notes

The Twilight Domain is a support and sustain subclass. Nothing it does is offensive; everything it does keeps the party moving.

Level 3 identity:

  • Eyes of Night solves party vision permanently, in one casting, with no upkeep — it is the strongest out-of-combat feature in the Domain
  • Vigilant Blessing is a pre-combat setup tool; used on your heaviest damage dealer, it frequently buys them the opening turn
  • Twilight Sanctuary is the centrepiece — a moving 9m aura that both heals chip damage and strips Charm and Fear every round for 10 turns

Level 6 upgrade:

  • Steps of Night gives you vertical mobility on a Bonus Action without spending a spell slot, and the dim light requirement is easy to satisfy — you can cast Darkness yourself and see through it with Eyes of Night
  • Flight for 10 turns from a Bonus Action means you can reposition the Twilight Sanctuary aura anywhere on the battlefield, including over terrain the rest of the party can't cross

Domain spell usage:

  • Moonbeam and Faerie Fire at Level 3 give you the light-based control that pairs with the rest of your kit; Faerie Fire strips invisibility outright and hands your party Advantage, while See Invisibility covers what it misses
  • Aura of Vitality at Level 5 runs alongside Twilight Sanctuary — both persist without spending your Action each turn, so you can heal and sustain while still casting
  • Circle of Power at Level 9 layers a second protective aura on top of Twilight Sanctuary; between the two, a party that stays clustered around the Cleric is very hard to break
