What Is the Architect of Ruin?

The Architect of Ruin is an Illrigger subclass that combines seal mechanics with arcane spellcasting — layering Wizard spells on top of Baleful Interdict.

At Level 3 it gains Wizard spellcasting and Spellblade, which turns one spell a Short Rest into a Bonus Action. At Level 7, Hellish Versatility lets you cast a cantrip in place of an Extra Attack attack, and Axiomatic Seals adds your Charisma modifier to seal damage. At Level 11, Submit burns seals to impose Disadvantage on saves against your spells.

Class Features

Progression Overview

LEVEL FEATURE
3 Asmodeus's Blessing, Spellcasting, Spellblade
7 Hellish Versatility, Axiomatic Seals
11 Submit

Level 3 Features

Asmodeus's Blessing

You gain proficiency in one skill of your choice from Arcana, History, Nature, and Religion.

Spellcasting

Your Charisma fuels your spellcasting, and you draw on the Wizard spell list.

At Level 3 you learn two Wizard cantrips and three Level 1 spells from the Abjuration and Evocation schools, and you gain two Level 1 spell slots. You learn more spells at almost every level, reach Level 2 spells and slots at Illrigger 7, and gain a third cantrip at Level 10.

ILLRIGGER LEVEL SLOTS (1st) SLOTS (2nd)
3 2
4–6 3
7–9 4 2
10–12 4 3

Spellblade

Once per Short Rest you can cast a spell as a Bonus Action instead of an Action.

Level 7 Features

Hellish Versatility

Once on each of your turns, you can cast one of your Illrigger cantrips in place of one of the attacks granted by your Extra Attack feature.

This blends casting into the Attack action — one weapon attack plus one cantrip per turn without giving up the attack sequence.

Axiomatic Seals

When you burn one or more seals to deal damage to a creature, you can activate this boon (no action required) to add your Charisma modifier (minimum of 1) to each seal's damage roll.

Level 11 Features

Submit

When you cast an Illrigger spell you know, you can burn two seals on an Interdicted creature (no action required) to impose Disadvantage on its saving throw against the spell. Submit is a toggle that requires at least 2 seals available.

Playstyle Summary

The Architect of Ruin is a spell-and-seal hybrid.

Your combat identity:

  1. Baleful Interdict — mark targets; your spells and seals reinforce each other
  2. Spellblade at Level 3 — once a Short Rest, cast a spell as a Bonus Action and still take your Attack action
  3. Hellish Versatility at Level 7 — one weapon attack plus one cantrip per Attack action
  4. Axiomatic Seals — burned seals each deal +Charisma modifier damage
  5. Submit at Level 11 — burn two seals to impose Disadvantage on a save against your spell; pair with your strongest save-or-suck cast
