What Is the Path of Wild Magic?

The Path of Wild Magic is a Barbarian subclass infused with untamed magic. Every Rage triggers a random magical effect, and its other features hand out buffs and spell slots to the party — making it the only Barbarian subclass that meaningfully supports casters.

Class Features

Progression Overview

LEVEL FEATURE
3 Wild Magic Surge, Magic Awareness
6 Bolstering Magic
9 Bolstering Magic: Level 3 Spell Slot
10 Unstable Backlash

Level 3

Wild Magic Surge Magical energy roils inside you. Every time you enter a Rage, a random magical effect triggers. The effect is chosen for you and lasts as long as the Rage.

Magic Awareness A Bonus Action, usable once per turn, that lets everyone within 3 m add their Proficiency Bonus to saving throws against spells until the start of your next turn.

Level 6

Bolstering Magic Once per Long Rest you can spend an Action to bolster yourself or an ally you are standing next to with one of the following:

  • Boon — a +1d4 bonus to Attack Rolls and Ability Checks
  • Level 1 Spell Slot — recover an expended Level 1 spell slot
  • Level 2 Spell Slot — recover an expended Level 2 spell slot

Level 9

Bolstering Magic: Level 3 Spell Slot Bolstering Magic gains a third slot-recovery option, restoring a Level 3 spell slot.

Level 10

Unstable Backlash While Raging, taking damage or failing a saving throw triggers another Wild Magic effect, replacing the current one.

Playstyle Notes

The Path of Wild Magic is the support Barbarian. Bolstering Magic is the reason to take it: handing a Wizard or Sorcerer back a spell slot once per Long Rest, and a Level 3 slot from Level 9, is resource generation no other martial subclass provides. The Boon option is the fallback when nobody needs a slot — +1d4 to attack rolls covers a full minute of a single ally's attacks.

Wild Magic Surge is deliberately out of your hands. You don't pick the effect, so the subclass reads as unreliable, but every roll on the table is a benefit of some kind — the variance is in which benefit, not whether you get one. In practice that means you shouldn't build a turn around the surge; treat it as a bonus on top of a normal Rage.

Unstable Backlash at Level 10 is the one feature that cuts both ways. It rerolls the surge whenever you take damage or fail a save, which is often — a Barbarian in melee is being hit constantly. If you rolled an effect you liked, it will not survive long. It's best understood as more chances at a good effect rather than as a way to fix a bad one.

Magic Awareness is easy to forget and worth remembering before an enemy caster's turn. A party clustered inside 3 m all adding Proficiency Bonus to spell saves is a large swing against a single big area spell, and this mod puts it on a once-per-turn cooldown rather than once per Short Rest, so it is available in every round you can spare the Bonus Action.
