What Is the Tempest Domain?

The Tempest Domain is a Cleric subclass that channels storm power into both offense and defense. At Level 3, Wrath of the Storm lets you release lightning or thunder as a Reaction when hit in melee, and Destructive Wrath maximizes thunder and lightning damage using Channel Divinity. Thunderbolt Strike at Level 6 pushes creatures 10 feet whenever you deal Lightning damage. The Tempest Domain also grants Heavy Armor and Martial Weapon proficiencies at Level 3.

Class Features

Progression Overview

LEVEL FEATURE
3 Tempest Domain Spells, Wrath of the Storm, Destructive Wrath, Heavy Armor, Martial Weapons
6 Thunderbolt Strike

Level 3

Tempest Domain Spells The following spells are always prepared and don't count against your prepared spell limit.

Level 3: Thunderwave, Fog Cloud, Shatter, Gust of Wind
Level 5: Call Lightning, Sleet Storm
Level 7: Ice Storm, Freedom of Movement
Level 9: Destructive Wave, Insect Plague

Bonus Proficiencies You gain proficiency with Martial Weapons and Heavy Armor.

Wrath of the Storm When a creature within 5 feet of you that you can see hits you with an attack roll, you can take a Reaction to cause the creature to make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, the creature takes 2d8 Lightning or Thunder damage (your choice); on a successful save, it takes half as much damage.

It costs only your Reaction — there is no separate use limit.

Destructive Wrath When you roll Thunder or Lightning damage, you can expend a use of Channel Divinity to deal maximum damage instead of rolling.

Level 6

Thunderbolt Strike When you deal Lightning or Thunder damage to a Large or smaller creature, you can push it up to 3 m away from you.

Playstyle Notes

The Tempest Domain is the storm-damage martial Cleric. Heavy Armor and Martial Weapons at Level 3 make the Tempest Cleric as durable as a Fighter in melee while retaining full Cleric spellcasting. Wrath of the Storm punishes melee attacks on you — a Reaction that deals 2d8 Lightning or Thunder on a failed Dexterity save, with no daily cap beyond your Reaction.

Destructive Wrath pairs perfectly with Shatter (3d8 Thunder in a 10-foot sphere) or Call Lightning (3d10 Lightning per bolt) — maximizing the damage dice without extra spell slots. Thunderbolt Strike at Level 6 adds 3 m of forced movement to your Lightning and Thunder damage, which stacks up over Call Lightning's repeated bolts.

The Domain spell list covers fog, thunder zones, and weather control: Fog Cloud for obscurement, Thunderwave for push and damage, Call Lightning for sustained area control, Sleet Storm for difficult terrain and Concentration disruption, and Destructive Wave at Level 9 as the finisher.
