What Is the Way of the Four Elements?

The Way of the Four Elements is a Monk subclass built around elemental attunement — freely switching which element you deal damage with and dealing elemental damage with every strike. This rework gives the Four Elements Monk a scaling elemental burst at Level 6 and flight at Level 11.

At Level 3, one Ki Point puts you into Elemental Attunement for the rest of the fight, and from there you can freely switch which of the five elements is active between attacks — your elemental identity isn't locked in.

Level 3: Elemental Attunement

Elemental Attunement is an action costing 1 Ki Point. It imbues you with elemental energy for 100 turns and, while it is up, adds several toggles to your hotbar:

  • Element toggles — five toggles, one for each of Acid, Cold, Fire, Lightning, and Thunder. Only one can be active at a time, but you can switch between them freely at any point, including between attacks. Whichever is active replaces the normal Bludgeoning damage of your unarmed strikes and monk weapon attacks with that element.
  • Reach — a toggle (on by default) that extends your Unarmed Strike's reach to 15 feet.
  • Push / Pull — two more toggles, mutually exclusive with each other. While either is active, a melee Unarmed Strike that hits forces the target to make a Strength saving throw or be pushed or pulled 3 meters.

Nothing is locked in — swap elements mid-fight to answer whatever resistance the enemy in front of you happens to have.

Ki-Empowered Strikes (gained at Level 6) shares a toggle group with these element toggles: it's on by default, converting your unarmed strikes to Force damage, but switching on an element toggle automatically switches it off (and vice versa), so only one damage-type override is ever active at once.

Level 6: Elemental Burst

Spend 2 Ki Points as an Action to target a point within 18 meters and release a burst there. Choose the element (Acid, Cold, Fire, Lightning, or Thunder) independently each time you cast it — it isn't tied to whichever attunement toggle is currently active on your unarmed strikes.

  • Range: 18 meters
  • Area: 6-meter radius around the targeted point
  • Damage: 3 × your Martial Arts die — half on a successful save
  • Type: Your choice of Acid, Cold, Fire, Lightning, or Thunder
  • Save: Dexterity against 8 + your Proficiency Bonus + your Wisdom modifier

Elemental Burst is a targeted radius AoE, not something that goes off around you — pick a cluster of enemies at range and hit that spot instead.

Level 11: Stride of the Elements

While your Elemental Attunement is active, you gain a Fly action, letting you cross the battlefield over anything in the way.

Playstyle Summary

The Way of the Four Elements is a melee Monk build that deals elemental damage instead of Bludgeoning.

Your combat loop:

  1. Attack with unarmed strikes — your active attunement replaces the Bludgeoning damage with that element
  2. Flurry of Blows — 2-3 additional hits, same element applied
  3. Stunning Strike — still your most powerful Ki spend at Level 5
  4. Elemental Burst at Level 6 — target a cluster of enemies within 18m, choose an element, 2 Ki for area damage
  5. Stride of the Elements at Level 11 — a Fly action while attuned, for repositioning

Your element isn't locked in — switch freely between Acid, Cold, Fire, Lightning, and Thunder to answer whatever's in front of you.
