Subclass Druid Circle of the Land

What Is the Circle of the Land?

The Circle of the Land is a Druid subclass built around a terrain choice you make once per Long Rest. Picking Arid, Polar, Temperate, or Tropical gives you a cantrip and a set of always-prepared spells that a Druid would not otherwise get, and that set grows as your Druid level rises.

Alongside the terrain spells you get Land's Aid, a Wild Shape-fuelled burst that damages enemies and heals everyone else in the same area. Natural Recovery at Level 6 buys back spent spell slots between fights, and Nature's Ward at Level 10 layers condition immunities on top of a damage resistance tied to your current land.

Level 3: Circle of the Land Spells

Circle of the Land Spells is an Action you can use once per Long Rest. It opens a menu of the four lands, and the one you pick stays active until you use the ability again.

Your active land determines which spells you have prepared. Higher-level entries unlock as your Druid level reaches 5, 7, and 9 — swapping lands at Level 9 immediately gives you the full set for the new land, not a fresh start.

Land Cantrip Level 3 Level 5 Level 7 Level 9
Arid Fire Bolt Burning Hands, Blur Fireball Blight Wall of Stone
Polar Ray of Frost Fog Cloud, Hold Person Sleet Storm Ice Storm Cone of Cold
Temperate Shocking Grasp Sleep, Misty Step Lightning Bolt Freedom of Movement Greater Restoration
Tropical Acid Splash Ray of Sickness, Web Stinking Cloud Polymorph Insect Plague

These spells are always prepared and do not count against your prepared spell limit. The cantrip comes and goes with the land, so switching from Arid to Polar trades Fire Bolt for Ray of Frost.

At Level 3 you also choose one extra Druid cantrip, which is always prepared and stays with you regardless of which land is active.

The land choice is a Long Rest decision, not a per-fight one — pick it against the day ahead rather than the fight in front of you.

Level 3: Land's Aid

Land's Aid costs an Action and one Wild Shape charge.

  • Range: 18m
  • Area: 3m radius around the target point
  • Enemies: take Necrotic damage
  • Everyone else: regains the same amount as Hit Points
  • No attack roll and no saving throw — the damage and the healing both simply land
  • Also removes Burning from creatures in the area and leaves an Overgrowth surface behind

Damage and healing scale with your Druid level:

Druid Level Amount
3–4 2d6
5–9 3d6
10+ 4d6

Because the same roll damages enemies and heals allies, Land's Aid is at its best in a scrum where both are standing inside one 3m circle.

Level 6: Natural Recovery

Natural Recovery converts a pool of points into spell slots. You gain 3 points at Level 6 and one more at Levels 7, 9, and 11, for a total of 6.

Spending them is an Action and it can only be done out of combat. The cost matches the slot you want back:

Option Cost Restores
Natural Recovery: Level 1 1 point One Level 1 spell slot
Natural Recovery: Level 2 2 points One Level 2 spell slot
Natural Recovery: Level 3 3 points One Level 3 spell slot
Natural Recovery: Level 4 4 points One Level 4 spell slot
Natural Recovery: Level 5 5 points One Level 5 spell slot

The higher tiers are upcasts of the same action, so you pick the slot level when you use it.

Since the points are spent rather than used once, a Level 11 Land Druid can turn the full pool into two Level 3 slots, or spread it across smaller ones.

Level 10: Nature's Ward

Nature's Ward is always on and gives you:

  • Immunity to the Poisoned condition
  • Immunity to disease
  • Immunity to Charmed and Frightened, but only from Elementals and Fey
  • Resistance to one damage type, matching your active land: Fire (Arid), Cold (Polar), Lightning (Temperate), or Poison (Tropical)

The resistance follows your land choice, so it changes whenever you switch.

Playstyle Summary

The Circle of the Land is the Druid that plays as a full caster first. Wild Shape is still available, but the subclass spends its resources on spells and on Land's Aid rather than on staying in animal form.

Your loop:

  1. Pick a land after every Long Rest — Arid for fire damage and Wall of Stone, Polar for control and cold, Temperate for mobility and utility, Tropical for poison and Polymorph
  2. Open with the land's signature spell — Fireball, Sleet Storm, Lightning Bolt, or Stinking Cloud, depending on where you set your terrain
  3. Land's Aid when the lines are mixed — one Action and one Wild Shape charge damages the enemies and heals your party in the same 3m circle
  4. Natural Recovery when you run dry — between fights only, an Action that buys back the slot you most want

The land cantrip is worth counting as part of your damage. Each land hands you an elemental cantrip that fits it, and if you take Potent Spellcasting from the Elemental Fury choice at Druid Level 7, that cantrip gains your Wisdom modifier on damage.

Nature's Ward at Level 10 lines up with whatever land you favour: an Arid Druid throwing Fire Bolt and Fireball also gets Fire Resistance, so the terrain you attack from is the terrain you shrug off.
