Local Mint

← all buildings · wiki index

A single-level building: there is nothing to upgrade it into.

Local Mint (Civic)

Local Mint (Civic)

The game ships no picture of its own for this level and shows the Small School (Civic) picture instead.

An Autonomous Mint increases happiness but breeds local independence, and with it, a desire for more freedom, as they will mint coins representing their city/culture.

Freedom is in the air, and in the pockets!

Granting the settlement its own mint is a gift and a curse. It will please the citizens, who will now see their own culture stamped onto their currency, and will be a boost to trade. But beware, too much freedom leads to dangerous ambitions. When settlements feel more independent, they might start imagining themselves free. Letting them mint their own coins might make them happy, but it’s only a matter of time before they start wanting more than just money. Proceed with caution!

Historically, the mint was a source of wealth and control. The Ptolemies, for example, tried to make an inner economy and only allowed to use their coins. The mint in many cases was a symbol of independence. In case of Bosporan Kingdom, during the time of consolidation of power, kings allowed mint only in the capital, while before there were at least 5-6 another mints. The decentralization of the kingdom in the II BCE, even without any written sources, could be seen through the sudden appearance of new minting locations. The person who controlled the mint influenced all others who used those coins, as he decided: what will be on coin (propaganda), from which metal it will be made, and how much was the coin worth.
