"It is a habitual Iberian custom to keep at hand a poison, which is made out of an herb that is nearly like parsley and painless, so as to have it ready for every eventuality, and it is also their custom to devote their lives to whomever they attach themselves, even to the point of death." – Strabo of Amaseia
When the early morning sun slowly rises over the Idubeda Mountains, it casts its divine light on the mighty walls of Edeta, the impressive temples and the richly decorated central hall. Here, high up in the rocky hills, lies the capital of our people, the Edetani. We are the foremost of the Iberians, and the strongest people in Ispania. From the inaccessible mountains in the West to the golden beaches in the East, this land is ours. We have dwelled here ever since the Goddess created Earth. In the North, our brothers, the Sedetani, live on the stretch of land from the coast into the valley of the river Iber, after which we have named ourselves and this great country. They neighbour our cousins, the brave Ilergetes, and also the Ilercavones to the East. These peoples are our friends and we not only trade with them, but also support each other in war.
However, mortal danger looms in the West and North West. The terrible Arevaci lead a union of Celtiberians, and on the adjacent highlands, behind our Idubeda mountains, the Carpetani, Vaccaei and Vettones are spreading the culture of the Celtic invaders who want to take over mother Ispania. Rumour has it some Iberians have gone as far as adopting the weapons of these 'foreigners'! The newcomers live in villages or roam the land in hordes and do not even write down their poems and laws in solid stone or bronze! Yet, for now, we are safe: Good fighters they may be, but they lack the knowledge and technology to storm our massive walls.
In the South, opportunities exist for a clever man to become a very wealthy man. The Turdetanians, who live in the area once ruled by the legendary Tartessians, have a culture that they say is even more ancient than ours or that of the Kenaʿani from the shores of Asia. The Turdetanians are a prospering merchant people, and in their land much gold and silver can be found. To their East, and to the South of Edetania, the Bastetani and Oretani control the rich mines between the Silver Mountain and the Orospeda range. Go there, and you may gain a fortune – or lose your life. The same is true if you decide to sail the seas – from Gadir or our very own Arse, or from one of the cities of the Kenaʿani on the Contestanian and Bastetanian coast, you may board a ship and visit foreign countries to sell our goods. Yet, can the Kenaʿani or those men who call themselves Hellenes – and who boldly planted a colony in the territory of the Indiketes – be trusted? No matter if you are a salesman, a seaman or a leader of our people – you should always be wary of the greed and avarice of the outsiders.
While clever men can become rich men, so can dumb men, as long as they are brave. The Turdetanians, Kenaʿani and Hellenes are always in the need of soldiers to fight their needless wars against each other or the Celts. In fact, my own great-grandfather fought on a great island towards the sunset called Sikelia for a bloodthirsty king called Dionysios who dreamed of crushing the Kenaʿani and setting fire to Qart Hadasht itself. In the eternal circle of time, Dionysios perished, and my grandfather perished with him.
What will never perish, however, is the mighty stone on which our cities are built. Edeta, our capital, where our kings reside, will never be overcome by our greed neighbours or the pesky Celts, nor will they be able to capture our wealthiest city, Arse. This grand town lies on the seaward foothills of the Idubeda, at a distance of about seven Emporionite stades from the sea. The territory of Arse yields every kind of crop and is the most fertile in the whole of Ispania. Its great harbour is the gate to the grand sea of the East, and its might palaces have seen generations of kings, queens and royal advisors come and go.
Now, you know everything you need to know to lead our people. To be accepted, you must show bravery and strength. If you are the first man to climb the enemy's walls, the best men of Edetania will devote their lives to you, and follow you into eternity if they have to. Be the first to charge the enemy in battle, the first to speak at the councils of the nobles and the first to welcome the traders into our cities. Secure our position, support our allies and defend the Iberian peoples against the Celtic threat, while never forgetting about the power of the Kenaʿani. Maybe, opportunities can be found, maybe, our warriors can extend the borders of our kingdom, and maybe, we can secure the richest mines of Ispania for ourselves. May the Goddess lead you!
