Winn WellWhisper

Stephen Reid edited this page Oct 2, 2026 · 3 revisions

Member of the EverAfters of HemsHollow. Winn WellWhisper works only in whispers. He tells his stories at the old town well, and he has never once raised his voice above a breath. They are the smallest tales in the troupe's repertoire, and the gentlest: lost buttons found, first snows, a kindness nobody saw. Before long half the town is leaning in together around the well, shoulder to shoulder, holding its breath. Winn is shy of crowds and blushes at applause, but he will not raise his voice for anyone, the Void included. "A whisper is still a story," he says, "and a story is still louder than nothing."

Of all the EverAfters, it is Winn the WonderWings love best. They come to rest on his hat, on his shoulders and on the rim of the well while he whispers, and they stay, sometimes for a whole story, folded and still, as no WonderWing stays for anyone else in Threadbare. Patchlings swear they have seen him whisper to them, and seen them whisper back. Scholars from The University of the Unseen have sat by the well for weeks trying to hear what passes between them, and not one of them has heard a thing. Winn only blushes, and says that the WonderWings are very good listeners, and so is he. Some say every new story Winn tells came to him on a pair of patchwork wings.

Story Magic

The Lean-In. Winn's whisper is heard exactly as clearly by the listener at the back of the square as by the one beside him at the well, and every single listener is quite certain that the story is being told to them alone. Once a crowd has leant in to hear Winn, it cannot bring itself to lean out again until the very last word.
