Clip Extractor Fixed Length Clips
Use this when every clip should be the same length, for example a series of 5-second segments. Instead of marking In and Out, you set a length and slide a box along the timeline.
Press L (or the Fixed length button) to turn it on.
Type the length in either box:
-
Seconds, down to hundredths (for example
4.46). -
Frames (for example
107).
The other box updates to match. Whichever you typed last is the one that is exported exactly. A length longer than the video is clamped to the video.
A red box on the timeline shows the selected clip.
- Drag the box to move the clip.
- Click outside the box to jump the clip start to that spot.
- Click inside the box to move the playhead within the clip.
- Shift+drag scrubs without moving the box.
While fixed length is on, Play, frame stepping, keyframe jumps, Home and End all stay inside the selection and stop at its last frame. Pressing Play at the end starts again from the clip start.
A row of buttons appears that mirrors the playback buttons, but moves the selection box instead of the playhead:
| Button | Key | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Ctrl+Home | Move clip to the start of the video |
| ◀K | Ctrl+Shift+Left | Clip start to the previous keyframe |
| ◀ | Ctrl+Left | Move back one frame |
| ▶ | Ctrl+Right | Move forward one frame |
| K▶ | Ctrl+Shift+Right | Clip start to the next keyframe |
| End | Ctrl+End | Move clip to the end of the video |
| Start at playhead | I | Clip starts at the frame you are looking at |
| Next clip | N | Clip starts on the first frame the current clip does not include |
| Playhead to clip start | Home | Jump the playhead back to the clip start |
Mark In moves the clip to start at the current frame; Mark Out moves it to end just before the current frame.
- Set the length and press L.
- Move the box to the start and press Ctrl+Shift+E (Quick export).
- Press N to move to the next clip, then export again.
Next clip uses the true frame count of the clip, so consecutive exports line up with no overlap and no gap. When there is no room for another full clip, it moves to the end of the video and says so in the status bar.
Export and Quick export use the selection. Lossless is still offered when both ends happen to land on keyframes and no crop, flip or colour match is active; otherwise the clip is re-encoded. Crop works at the same time. See Exporting.
Turning fixed length off restores your In/Out marks.
The starting length and unit are set in Settings > Preferences > Crop & clip. See Preferences and Themes.
