Getting Started

Requirements

  • 64-bit Windows 10 or 11
  • About 400 MB of free disk space for the app and a few hundred MB more for thumbnails of a large library
  • Nothing else to install. Python is not needed.

Install

  1. Open the latest release and download RulZ-Image-Organizer-...-win64.zip.
  2. Unzip it anywhere (Documents, a USB drive, ...). Keep the whole RulZ Image Organizer folder together.
  3. Run RulZ Image Organizer.exe. You can pin it to the Start menu or taskbar.

Windows SmartScreen may say "Windows protected your PC" because the app isn't code-signed. Click More info, then Run anyway.

The first time it starts, RulZ asks how it should look.

Choose your look

Pick Dark or Light. You can change it any time, see Appearance.

Add your photos

  1. Open Library in the sidebar.
  2. Click Add folder... and choose the folder that holds your photos. Subfolders are included automatically.
  3. RulZ starts scanning at once. Photos appear on the Photos page as they are found, and people appear on People as their faces are grouped.

Library page

The first scan of a big library takes a while, roughly 5 to 10 photos per second depending on your PC. You can keep using the app meanwhile, or click Pause.

Name your first person

  1. Open People. Each circle is a group of faces that look like the same person.
  2. Click a circle, then click the name (or Rename) and type a name.
  3. Now you can search for that person on Photos.

Next: People and Corrections and Search and Filters.

Upgrading

Unzip the new version over the old folder (or next to it). Your library, names and corrections live separately in %LOCALAPPDATA%\RulZ Image Organizer, so they carry over. After an upgrade the next scan may add new information (for example poses) to photos it already knows; that runs once in the background and never changes your people groups.
