Overview

Like every Elder, Knot carried a book, and it was full: the golden ages, the long wandering, everything Knot had seen and made and loved, written in Knot's own hand.

Threadlings call it the Unbound Book: unbound because its pages were torn from their binding, and because it was the book of the one who was made to bind the world.

The Second Denial

When Echo, child of Once, came to ask Not to remember the golden ages and the world that had loved them, Not answered by tearing the pages from the book, one by one, and letting them go. This was the second of the Three Denials, None, for nothing remains, aimed at Once. The pages scattered across Threadbare, and Not did not watch where they fell. See The Undoing of Knot.

The Scattered Pages

Over the ages some of its pages have been lost and some found. Every page found holds something of Knot: their thoughts, in their own hand, and glimpses of the fall that no telling records. Null still carries what is left: the empty binding, holding no writing at all.

Narrative Function

  • The pages of the Unbound Book are a game thread: collectible pages in Knot's hand that reveal the fall piece by piece.
  • Recovering them undoes None one page at a time.
  • They are one of the many sources through which the StoryWeaver learns the story of Knot, alongside scripture fragments, the Elders and the Observist.
