WishWisps

Stephen Reid edited this page Oct 3, 2026 · 2 revisions

WishWisps are small, weightless lights that drift wherever there is still hope to be drifted on - bobbing in lanterns, perching on hat-brims, glowing softly in the cup of a cupped hand. Born of the Lucent Lakes in brighter days, they remember every wish ever whispered into the water, and they offer their company to StoryWeavers who carry a question worth answering. A Wisp rarely grants a wish, and never lightly, but it will lend its glow: passive powers, a clearer path, a steadier heart. Treat one kindly, and it will follow you through the Fraying itself.

Wisps and Yearn

The Wisps were born of the Lucent Lakes, and since the Lakes were lost to the Void, they have never been able to go home. Their longing for the Lakes draws them to the Elder Yearn, who keeps that same longing at the water's edge in Frays End. Through this bond, the Wisps gift Yearn their wishes freely, whenever she asks, a power no other Elder holds, and she uses them to help Threadlings relive a story from their past once more.

Wishes and Rekindling

Every Wisp carries a wish, and can give it. But a wish is made of the Wisp's own light. The moment it is granted, the Wisp's glow dims almost to nothing, and then slowly rekindles, over days or even seasons, until it is bright enough that the wish is ready again. Wisps remember the Wisp Trade, when their kind were captured and drained for coin and power, and so they almost never give their wishes away. Most Threadlings will never be granted one.

Wisps and the StoryWeaver

In the StoryWeaver's journey, it is by helping Yearn, gathering the Wisps the Void has scattered and guiding them home to her shore, that a Wisp first chooses to travel with the StoryWeaver as a companion. Because Yearn has vouched for them, the Wisp offers the StoryWeaver the same gift it offers her: its wishes, freely given, each followed by the slow rekindling of its light (see Threadbare Plot).
