"No cloth can breathe without its gaps. Knot forgot that the gaps only exist because of the cloth."
-- A KnitWitch saying

Overview

The Interstice is the name Threadlings give to the gaps in the fabric of the Great Weave: the small, empty spaces between every thread. Every cloth has them. They are essential to the make-up of the world, for without them no cloth could breathe, bend, stretch or move. In the middle of all the world's noise, they are little havens of quiet.

The Interstice is the opposite of the surface of the world. Where the surface is light, colour, story and noise, the Interstice is dark, still and silent.

The Nothing Beneath the Weave

Beneath the Interstice lies what Threadlings call the nothing beneath the Great Weave. It is simply the Weave's natural extension: the dark, still quiet that lies beneath a blanket. It is not the Void, and has nothing to do with it. The nothing beneath the Weave takes nothing and unravels nothing. It is only the quiet that every cloth rests upon.

Null's Exile

Long before the Void was born, Knot began to study the Interstice rather than the threads of the Weave, and found peace there. After the Three Denials, with no way to undo creation and no way to finish it, Null retreated into the Interstice and hid in the dark and the quiet: the closest thing to a perfect world that they could find. They stayed there for a long, long time, an exile longer than most of Threadbare's histories.

It was never enough. The gaps in a cloth only exist because there is cloth around them. It was the LoomLight Festival at LoomLit, and the birth of the Void there, that drew Null back out. See The Undoing of Knot.

For Contributors

  • The Interstice is not the Void. It is a natural, necessary part of the Weave, and is not dangerous in itself. Never use it as another name for the Void.
  • Quiet, not evil. The Interstice can be eerie and lonely, but it is a place of stillness, not of harm.

Wiki Notes

Still in development:

  • How long Null's exile in the Interstice lasted, in the world's own measures.
  • Whether anything in the Interstice remembers Null.
  • Whether any Threadling, or the StoryWeaver, can ever enter it.
