"StoryWeaver, I'm so glad you've come."
-- Wist WishWeaver - KnitWitch of WeaveWater
Wist WishWeaver is the resident KnitWitch of WeaveWater, and keeper of the Sacred Sewing Machine in the town's Summoning Square. When a Calling Cloth has gathered enough stitches, by enough different hands, it is Wist who begins the long ritual on the machine, and Wist who keeps watch through the night as it sews a StoryWeaver from the scraps.
She has watched over more Callings than anyone alive, and seen every one of those StoryWeavers wake, and leave. She has never once asked one of them to stay.
When the Void had taken almost all of WeaveWater, and only the Summoning Square still stood, the town's last Threadlings hung a Calling Cloth for themselves. Each stitched in a scrap of something they owned, or donated an old object, among them a button, a thimble and a needle. Wist began the ritual on the Sacred Sewing Machine, and kept watch all night as it thrummed through its work.
By morning, the StoryWeaver of the Threadbare Plot had been sewn from WeaveWater's last loose ends. Wist was the first face they saw, and the first voice they heard. She sent them out with the button, the thimble and the needle, towards Frays End, and a world in peril.
Wist is quiet and watchful, as KnitWitches tend to be, and patient in the way only someone who has sat up through a great many nights can be. She speaks to the Sacred Sewing Machine as though it were an old friend, and to every new StoryWeaver as though she has been waiting for them in particular, which, in a way, she has. Like every KnitWitch, she never sends a visitor away without a warning and a parting gift.
- The watcher in the night. Wist's role is to begin the ritual and to keep watch. The StoryWeaver is made by the many hands who stitched the Calling Cloth, not by Wist alone.
- Warm, not grand. She is a town's KnitWitch, not a High KnitWitch. Her magic is small, steady and kind.
- A face to come home to. Wist is a natural presence if the StoryWeaver ever returns to WeaveWater, and at the LoomLight Festival in the finale.
- WeaveWater - her home, and the Summoning Square
- KnitWitches - her coven
- StoryWeaver - sewn on the Sacred Sewing Machine while she keeps watch
- Threadbare Plot - which begins with her ritual
