Tess TreadleFoot
Type: Threadling
Home: WeaveWater
Role: Runner and errand-weaver of WeaveWater, and the StoryWeaver's first guide
"Every road out of WeaveWater starts at a treadle and ends somewhere better. Keep up!"
-- Tess TreadleFoot - Runner of WeaveWater
Tess TreadleFoot is the young runner of WeaveWater: the Threadling who carried messages between the weaving sheds, fetched thread from the mills and ran errands up and down the Long Warp for anyone who asked. She is named for the treadle, the foot pedal that drives a loom, and like a treadle she is never still. No one in WeaveWater knows the paths in and out of town better than she does.
When the StoryWeaver is sewn in the Summoning Square, Tess is one of the last Threadlings left in WeaveWater. In Journey to Frays End, she guides the newly sewn StoryWeaver along the perilous path to Frays End, through a world already fraying at the edges (see Threadbare Plot). Wist WishWeaver stays behind in WeaveWater, keeping watch over the Sacred Sewing Machine.
Tess is quick, brave and talkative, and a little impatient with anyone who walks slower than she does, which is everyone. She knows every shortcut, every ford and every stepping stone between WeaveWater and the wider world, and she treats the StoryWeaver's first journey as one more errand that simply has to be run, and run well.
- The first friend. Tess is the first companion the StoryWeaver ever has, and sets the tone for the journey: warm, brave and practical.
- A guide, not a hero. She knows the way, but the StoryWeaver must face the dangers of the road.
- Named for the loom. Like every Threadling of WeaveWater, her name comes from weaving.
- WeaveWater - her home
- Wist WishWeaver - the KnitWitch of WeaveWater
- StoryWeaver - whom she guides to Frays End
- Frays End - where the journey ends
- Threadbare Plot - which begins in WeaveWater
