   Split Curves

Cut curves wherever they cross, so each piece runs from one crossing to the next.

Menu: Combine > Split Curves | In depth: Split Curves

Select the curves and run it. Every place two of them cross is cut, and what you get back is a piece per run between crossings. Nothing moves and nothing is added: the drawing looks the same until you click a piece and find it comes away on its own.

This is the pass a lattice needs before Weave. Weave reads a crossing as four curve ends meeting in one place, so a strand drawn as one long run straight through its crossings has no such place in it and weaves as nothing.

What it leaves alone

  • Arcs stay arcs. A piece of an arc is an arc, not a row of little straight segments standing in for one.
  • Meeting end to end is not a crossing. Curves that only touch at their endpoints are left whole, because there is nothing there to break.
  • Anything that is not a curve. Points and rays in the selection come through untouched.
  • The loose ends. A strand that runs past the last crossing and simply stops keeps that tail. Nothing is tidied away, which is what separates this from Auto Region, where the danglers are dropped on the floor.

A curve is cut where it crosses its own neighbor too, even when the two belong to the same shape. A strand crossing the strand beside it crosses it just as much as it crosses a stranger.

The same thing in the node editor

The node of the same name does exactly this, and its page carries the picture and the full account: Split Curves.

Its two near relatives are worth knowing apart. Split Regions works on closed regions rather than curves, and shatters them into faces. Auto Region finds the same crossings this does, hands back the enclosed faces, and keeps none of the loose ends.
