Image Sample node icon   Image Sample (node)

Turn an image into a FIELD of values (brightness/R/G/B/alpha) to drive other nodes; click the pills to set channel and wrap (tile/mirror/stretch).

A gradient image on the left turned into a field of dots on the right, each sized by the sampled brightness.

Inputs

  • Image (any): the image to sample across space.
  • Channel (pulldown): which channel to read: Brightness (default), Red, Green, Blue, or Alpha. Shown as a pulldown when unwired; wire an integer 0-4 to drive it.
  • Wrap (pulldown): how the field reads outside the image's edges: Stretch (clamp the edge, default), Tile (repeat), or Mirror.

Outputs

  • Field (any): the sampled channel as a position-to-value field.

What it is for

Turns an image into a field: a value at every position rather than a single number. Feed that into a variety of other node sockets, like size, radius or rotation, and the image drives your pattern instead of appearing in it. This is the front of the halftone pipeline.

Channel picks what is read, brightness by default. Wrap decides what happens beyond the image's edges: Stretch holds the edge color, Tile repeats, Mirror flips each repeat.
