Rulers

Turn on measurement rulers along the top and left of the canvas to read positions and sizes at a glance.

The modeling window with rulers along the top and left edges: tick marks labeled in millimeters, a 'mm' unit label in the corner where they meet, world zero at the axes, and the cursor's position shown by a marker sliding along each ruler with a crosshair back to the pointer.

Rulers put a measuring scale along the top and left edges of the modeling canvas, so you can read a position or eyeball a size without stopping to measure. They sit on top of the view as a heads-up overlay and don't become part of your drawing.

What the rulers show

  • Tick marks at clean, round intervals: the spacing steps through sensible values (1, 2, 5 and their multiples) so the labeled marks stay comfortably spaced as you zoom in and out.
  • Labels in your working unit. The numbers read in whatever unit you're currently working in, and re-scale automatically as you zoom.
  • Zero at the axes. The rulers' zero lines up with the world origin, so a reading on the ruler is a real coordinate.
  • Finer subdivisions. Each labeled interval is split into smaller ticks so you can judge in-between positions.
  • A cursor marker. As you move the pointer, a marker slides along both rulers showing exactly where you are horizontally and vertically.
  • A unit label in the corner where the two rulers meet, naming the unit you're reading in.

Turning rulers on

Switch them on from View > Show Rulers. The setting is remembered between sessions, just like the grid and axes.

When rulers are on, the drawing area insets slightly to make room for them. Your geometry, snapping, and clicks all still land exactly where they should - the rulers only change what you see, not where things are.

Tip

Rulers pair naturally with guides. Read a position off a ruler, then drag a guide in from the ruler edge to lock construction to that line. See Guides.
