Perpendicular Offset node icon   Perpendicular Offset (node)

A point pushed off an edge at a right angle - from a base point, perpendicular to the line a->b, by a distance.

Inputs

  • From (point): the base point the offset starts from.
  • Edge Start (point) / Edge End (point): the edge a->b whose perpendicular sets the offset direction.
  • Handle (point): optional. When wired, the offset distance is this handle's own perpendicular distance from the a->b line - the draggable width-handle case, so you can size the offset by dragging a point.
  • Distance (number, editable): the offset distance when no Handle is wired.
  • Edge Length (boolean): when on, the distance tracks the live length of a->b (so a square stays square as you resize it); only the sign of Distance then picks which side.

Outputs

  • Point (point): From plus the unit perpendicular of a->b times the distance.

How the distance is decided

The point is From + perpUnit(a->b) | d. The distance d is, in order:

  1. the Handle's signed perpendicular distance from the a->b line, if a Handle is wired;
  2. else, with Edge Length on, the signed length of a->b (its sign taken from Distance);
  3. else the literal Distance.

Related

  • In the modeling view: the far corners of a Rectangle: Directed and a Square are perpendicular offsets from the base edge - this node is their twin.
  • Convert to Nodes emits it for a directed-rectangle or square corner. Distance stays a fixed value there, not a slider: a corner's width is the rectangle's, not a free degree of freedom.
