How to read the app's version number and when to quote it.
Locus Studio carries a version number, and it's worth knowing where to find it - it's the quickest way to say exactly which build you're running when something needs checking.
Open the About window to see the current version. It's read live from the running app, so what you see there is always the real, current build.
The number looks like 0.3.51 - three parts separated by dots.
The last number counts releases. Each new one bumps it by one, so 0.3.51 becomes 0.3.52, and a higher last number simply means a newer build. It counts releases rather than grading them: a release of nothing but fixes moves it exactly as far as one full of new tools.
The middle number names the beta stage. Beta 1 was 0.2.x and Beta 2 was 0.3.x. A new stage is a deliberate decision, not something that happens on its own.
Beta 3 is the one exception: it is 0.3.51, not 0.4.0. It sits at the top of the 0.3.x range instead of opening a range of its own, and releases within it count up from there. Beta 4 will be 0.4.0, and the middle number goes back to naming the stage.
That also means 0.3.15 through 0.3.50 are numbers that never existed. Beta 2 ended at 0.3.14, and the jump to 0.3.51 is what marks the new stage, so the gap is not a run of releases you missed.
The first number is still 0, which is how a version says the app can still change under you. It moves to 1 when Locus Studio leaves beta.
Note
This is the application's version - which build of Locus Studio you're running. It's not a version number for your design. Your saved designs are described in The .locus file.
Reach for the version number when you're:
- Reporting a bug: include the version so the problem can be traced to the exact build you saw it in.
- Checking whether a feature has landed: a feature note often mentions the version it arrived in. Compare that against your About window to know whether you already have it or need to update.
Tip
When in doubt, open About and copy the number verbatim. A precise version turns "it's broken" into something that can actually be pinned down.
