Show Guides (command)Non-printing reference lines dragged out from the rulers.

A checkable toggle, on by default.
Guides are reference lines you drag out of the rulers. They are not geometry: they never export, and they are not part of the construction.
This toggle governs whether they are drawn. Snapping to them is a separate switch, Snap to Guides in the Edit menu, so you can leave the snapping on and simply stop looking at the lines.
