C#: decimal

Handbook C# · Practical Guide

A decimal number for calculations where decimal representation is important.

Simple example (Example.cs)

Save this example separately as Example.cs. Run it independently of the other examples on this page.

Example.cs:

// PROJECT-EXAMPLE
decimal amount = 12.5M;
var result = amount + 2;
System.Console.WriteLine(result.ToString(System.Globalization.CultureInfo.InvariantCulture));

Result:

14.5

Syntax

decimal value = 12.5M;

The type of the variable determines the range and rules of arithmetic. To check the overflow of integers, use checked; for text conversion — TryParse.

Example 1: simple form

        decimal first = 12.5M;
        decimal second = 2;
        Console.WriteLine(first + second);
    }
}

Example 2: another practical form

using System.Threading.Tasks;
using System.IO;
using System.Runtime.InteropServices;
using System.Runtime.CompilerServices;

public static class Program
{
    public static async Task Main(string[] args)
    {
        decimal[] values = [12.5M, 2, 3];
        foreach (decimal value in values) Console.WriteLine(value);
        Console.WriteLine(decimal.MaxValue);
    }
}
